Librarians help students go beyond Google
When Susan Klopper, Goizueta Business Library’s Executive Director, worked in the corporate arena it was not unusual for her to get a research request with a two-hour deadline. Often a consultant would need information on a prospective client, background on an industry, etc. In short, Klopper had to know what to look for and the best resources to find it. Today, this depth of expertise is available to students and faculty at Goizueta.
“We know that it’s competitive out there,” Klopper says, “and that you don’t succeed by being sloppy or providing substandard information.”
She and her staff understand the demands of the business world because they’ve worked in it. Four out of five research librarians have been employed in the fields of consulting, accounting, marketing, IT, and insurance.
Not only do they know what print and electronic resources students must use in their study, they understand the expectations students will face after graduation. They, too, have worked in teams, meeting the demands of clients or employers for solid, timely information.
Goizueta’s research librarians show students where to look for information and how to evaluate its quality. “Google isn’t always the best source,” comments Klopper. “We help them get over the one-stop-shopping mindset.”
Business library team members see themselves as ancillary faculty, teaching students how to find the data they’ll need to succeed in class and beyond. “We view information fluency as a lifelong skill,” says Klopper.
After graduation, students can still turn to Goizueta business librarians for the information they’ll need to make crucial decisions. The library provides its students and alums access to Economist Intelligence Unit (IEU) and the Factiva database, which contains full-text articles from 10,000 international newspapers, wires, newsletters, journals, magazines and websites.
In the fall, students and alums will be able to access two more databases, each owned by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU). The ViewsWire service delivers daily reports on global politics, markets, and companies. Industry Briefing provides five-year forecasts and news analysis for eight key industries across 60 countries.
Every month, librarian Malisa Anderson writes a column in Goizueta's electronic newsletter "E-News" called Business Intelligence Corner. It offers tips on using Factiva, Google, and other databases.
The business library team is always looking for ways to serve Goizueta's alums. "We're engaged in continuing education," she declares. "The alumni are just as much our customers as the students, staff, and faculty."
