Benveniste named Goizueta dean

As The Goizueta Foundation Center for Research and Doctoral Education opens its doors, Goizueta Business School will welcome its new dean, Lawrence M. Benveniste, current dean of the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota. Benveniste assumes his post on July 1, 2005.

Benveniste replaces Tom Robertson, who left his position as dean in January 2005 after six-and-a-half years to assist President James Wagner in his quest to further internationalize Emory University.

“As Dean Robertson steps into his new role, we are indeed most fortunate to have Larry Benveniste come to us,” Wagner said. “He has a clear understanding of Goizueta’s potential and core values, as well as an appreciation for the vital role that the school plays in the larger university.”

Emory University Provost Earl Lewis believes that it’s too early to talk specifically about Benveniste’s top priorities, but notes that the new dean, “Must work with the faculty to implement the school’s strategic plans, continue to build areas of research and practice, and continue to forge a strong relationship with the local and national business community.”

Before serving as dean of the Carlson School in 2001, Benveniste was interim dean, associate dean of faculty and research, and chair of the finance department. He also holds the endowed chair as the U.S. Bancorp Professor in Finance and is considered one of the world’s foremost experts on IPOs. He’s also consulted and lectured widely on subjects such as the valuation of commercial real estate.

“Goizueta Business School is a rising star, and I look forward to being a part of its continued growth,” said Benveniste. “I am particularly excited about working with the great team of faculty, staff, students, and the leadership of Emory. And I look forward to building on Dean Robertson’s success in recruiting world-class faculty and students and partnering with the great business community in Atlanta.”

During the spring semester, Maryam Alavi, the John M. and Lucy Cook Chair in Information Strategy and chair of the Goizueta dean search committee, is serving as the school’s interim dean. Alavi is working with Benveniste to ensure a smooth transition.
